Should you freeze coffee beans?

A well-known tip in the coffee community is to keep coffee beans as fresh as possible you should freeze coffee beans. But is this a great solution?

Some models, like the Barista Express, just store the beans in a container on top of the machine. So how important is storing beans at a cold temperature if companies are just leaving them out in the open?

The logic is sound, freezers are known to keep food fresh, and there’s no denying the benefits of maintaining coffee beans at low temperatures. However, lifting them in and out of the freezer could end up doing more harm to them than good.

Moisture is the enemy of beans! By taking them out of the freezer, opening them up, then putting them back, you can introduce condensation into the container. Unless you want to divide your coffee beans into single-use portions, using a larger one is not going to help the freshness.

Large containers are better in a cool, dry place, like a cupboard. But if you want to take the time to parcel out daily/weekly portions to freeze then the fridge/freezer may be the best place for you. But an enormous coffee bean container in a freezer is a big NO!

But no matter where you keep them, maintaining an airtight seal is a must! And the second most thing to remember is no matter where/how you store your coffee beans if you are enjoying the taste of your coffee then keep doing what works for you! If you choose to freeze coffee beans, you’ll probably achieve a fresher taste. But if you don’t, that’s okay too.
